Muay Thai – what a wonderful sport, or dare we say Art? Yes, we do indeed. Muay Thai is in fact Art considering the level of precision and detail there lies in this unique combat sport. Muay Thai may to some people be better known as Thai Boxing, but no matter how one chooses to call the sport, the origin of it lies in the name. Yes, that’s right. Although you may not have been aware, Muay Thai is a physical and mental discipline originating from the land of smiles – Thailand. Muay Thai has different names. The most clinging of them all, as we find it, is perhaps “the art of eight limbs”, which implies that combatants need to use the fists, elbows, knees and shins in combination with each other in order to carry out this full contact sport.

The history of Muay Thai can be traced back to the middle of the 18th century where, during the battles between Burma, Siam and the Konbaung Dynasty a famous fighter with the name Nai Khaonomtom was captured in the year 1767. The Burmese, who captured him, knew of this expertise in hand-to-hand combat and they gave him the opportunity to fight for his freedom. Soon after winning the match, he was freed by his captors and allowed to return to Siam. He was acknowledged as a hero, and his fighting style became known as Siamese-Style boxing, later to be known as Muay Thai.

As a sport, Muay Thai became widespread internationally in the 20th century, when practitioners of the sport defeated notable practitioners of other martial arts. Hence, it has been widely accepted as a combat sport to take into account and it has since become a sport with several associations governing the league(s) worldwide.
In Thailand, Muay Thai is a sport often fought in front of spectators, who went to watch the fights for entertainment. These Muay contests gradually became an integral part of local festivals and celebrations, especially those held at temples.
